What is Siddhasana? How to do it? And it`s Benefits

Siddhasana is another common posture, prominently used by yogis while offering prayers or performing meditation. This asana is considered effective for the purification of all Seventy-Two Thousand energy channels, referred to as Nadis in yoga, thus facilitating the prana-vayu to flow easily to the higher chakras.

Etymology of Siddhasana

The name “Siddhasana” is a combination of two Sanskrit words: “Siddha” meaning accomplished and “Asana” meaning posture.

Steps for performing Siddhasana

1.     Sit down, while maintaining a little distance between your stretched legs.
2.     Lift the left foot from the previous position and place it at the perineum, i.e.- the area between the reproductive organ and anus).
3.     Hold the right foot and place it over the left foot.
4.     To attain more stability, the toes of the right foot can be placed into the space between the calf muscles of your left leg.
5.     Ensure that your backbone remains fully erect and the knees maintain a little distance from the floor.
6.     Hands can be placed on the knees, with the thumb touching the index finger (referred to as Gyan Mudra in yoga).
7.     Close your eyes and meditate. practitioners may also focus on the space between their eyebrows. Breathe calmly. This posture can be maintained for any length of time.  

Precaution for beginners/ practitioners

1.     In the beginning, beginners might find it uncomfortable to sit in Siddhasana for a longer time.  Beginners are advised to gradually increase the time of practice.
2.     Practice this asana according to your capacity and ability. Do not force yourself to sit in this posture for longer periods of time. if you feel pressure in leg joints after performing this asana, gently massage the aching or stretched area.

Benefits of performing Siddhasana

1.     Suitable for sitting for a longer time, for example for meditating or praying
2.     Regulates the functioning of the reproductive system and helps in controlling the urge for sex.
3.     increases mental stability.
4.     Straightens the spinal column and improves its steadiness.
